Camels eating paper cartons near a rubbish dumping area

I explore the desert once a week since many years. I collect some rubbish from the desert each week and throw it in the nearby facility of waste bins. Roughly, I collect and properly dispose some 500 kg rubbish each year. We must show sympathy and sensitivity to the nature at large and the poor camels specifically. In a study in UAE, (2008-2020) 30,000 camels analyzed in the field or in a laboratory by staff from Dubai’s Central Veterinary Research Laboratory, about 300 died because of polybezoars – lumps of indigestible material made of plastic. For details you can click the link of the National news paper.

We have now peer reviewed scientific support for my opinion of planting native flora. I have been documenting, analyzing, and reporting the worth of native flora in the context of biodiversity, food (for us and livestock), environmental support, and another aspect of goodness. Here is the link to my general article about the goodness of trees and other flora.

Africa Day and Food Security

Food security is a challenge almost in all the vulnerable regions of the world including Africa. The food security challenge is very genuine but the continent is rich with fertile soil, genetic resources, and the strong muscles of the youths. I gave 3 thematic talks, which you can read in the ensuing line.

Mitchell Mutumba, a Namibian farmer told that they use the donkey for the farm animals protection. The donkey if trained, will never allow the predators to enter the farm. That is really a very new a strange fact for me.

Working donkey in Uganda

The donkey consumes the woody vegetation of bushes, shrubs and trees. They can consume and digest the dried and fallen parts of the flora in dry season with the help of the strong and diverse gut microbiome. This specialized microbiome along with the nutrients rich manure make a way to transfer to the soil through manure and helps in the enrichment of the soil and sustain the life of the soil microbiome. The soil microbiome provides nutrients to the rhizosphere of the plants and give them the power to sustain and tolerate the droughts and high temperatures. This way, we have the rich and fertile soil today. Though all herbivores play the important ecological role in ecosystem management but donkey is topping all.

Biodiversity

Our soil is home to a diverse microbiome and other types of living organisms. Due to our wrongdoings, faulty agrifarming, and other activities, our soil is shedding its biodiversity and loses fertility.

camel milk yogurt

Recently, yogurt could not be made from CaM unless the dromedary milk samples were fortified with combinations of cow’s milk constituents (micellar casein, whey protein, and sodium caseinate) in the presence of microbial transglutaminase. Others added commercial chymosin along with gelatin, starch, and skim milk powder. However, the final product deviated from standards of identity for yogurt traditionally made by acidification (no cheese coagulant) by selected lactic acid bacterial starters.  Instead, the resulted CaM fermented product could be best described as a yogurt-like one.

The story of evolution by Dr Tariq in Urdu.

The desert creature camels have unique physiology

In the mysterious camels, the temperature of the exhaled air is dropped and the heat energy and water are reabsorbed in the nose. While exhaling the camels dehumidify the air with the help of specialized hair in the nose as the nasal opening is very narrow and hairy, remains wet all the time. This way the airy, narrow and wet nasal opening reabsorb the moisture and energy both and return to the body. This phenomenon is one of the other most important phenomena of the camels' unique strategy to conserve water in the arid conditions of its habitat.

Camels browsing on Zygophyllum qatarense

Thee is always a symbiotic relationship between camels and desert flora is incredible.

Zygophyllum qatarense is an important but reselient plant of the bush

I have learned much about the camels, their preferences, and the desert's flora. Zygophyllum has a very bitter taste and saltish plant because of its' high salts contents and some level of alkaloids (which depress the appetite of the animals, though camels have higher tolerable levels for alkaloids). Such biochemical molecules in the bushes like Zygophyllum sp. depress the appetite as well as poisonous for some types of livestock. Producing such molecules (alkaloids, saponin, etc) is the strategy of the plants to save their race from the grazing animals, therefore Zygophylum qatarense is browsed by camels to a certain level but not minimized to the ground level.

Camel milk is proving its worth as natural health pharmacy. The very stressfull and complicated conditions like that of Autism can be eased with the camel milk.

The desert nomads knew this, which is why their culture had survived for millennia by adapting to the desert rather than attempting to dominate it. From the beginning I realized I must learn what they had to teach, and to do things their way: to achieve this meant seeing the desert through their eyes.

The healthy effects of camel milk are attracting increasing attention from the consumers and the food industry. This is a very interesting new trend and requires some more research to optimize and develop consumer-acceptable functional products for commercialization.

In 2009, the author conceptualized the idea of a world camel day (WCD) to aware the people about the importance of camel as a food security agent in climate change scenario. From 2009 to 2012 WCD was celebrated in the province of Balochistan (the important habitat of camel, 50% share of the Pakistan's 1 million population of camels). Slowly and gradually, we earned the support at country as well as global level.

WCPF urgently needs funds for the establishment of a second wild camel breeding centre as the breeding centre at Zakhyn Us in Mongolia has reached its capacity of 30 wild camels. It was started in 2004 with just eight wild camels and now has 35 even though 8 have been released into their natural habitat. In addition, 5 new wild camel calves were born this year and all are thriving.

Camel milk is an amazing functional food and white gold of the desert. Camel milk is truly appreciated as the natural pharmacy. Why I was facing total health collapse with severe rheumatoid arthritis, the doctors put me on antibiotics and high doses of steroids and painkillers but no success. An elder wiseman advised me of taking fresh camel milk to clean my body from toxins. I did the same, my body was washed from chemicals and within a month I recovered. My status change from bed to a mountain climber. Camel milk is amazing.

Camel milk is making its space among the dairy products in general and especially as a super and functional food. This World Milk Day, for the first time, a global coalition of camel milk consumers, experts, and dairy producers from 35 countries will raise a virtual glass for camel milk.

For all these climate friendly, natural and immune-boosting reasons, please raise a virtual or real glass of camel milk to celebrate this World Milk Day!

"The camel saved humans for generations in the desert. In arid areas and hot weather over 45C, we see cows suffer as they need 8-10 times more water than camels to produce 1 liter of milk,” said Dr. Abdul Raziq Kakar, a UAE based camel dairy specialist from Pakistan and Camels4All blogger

Fermented camel milk is more rich with lactobacillus bacteria which ensures high lactic acid, providing better environment in the gut for digestibility and intake of the nutrients.

Having been in the camel's world of research and development, I have been advocating the camel as the animal of choice in the challenging environments as a model animal. The camel (Arabian and Bactrian) milk is also rich with super and unique nutrients, some act as ant-infectious and immune boosters. Camel milk makes immune system stronger as it contains series of protective proteins such as lysozyme, lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, immunoglobulin G, and immunoglobulin A.http://camel4all.blog/2020/04/22/a-book-on-camels-wins-nautilus-award/. The awareness and sensitivity are increasing about the different food items among the people. The people are turning from junk to the real and natural food. The camel milk (CaM) is one of the important natural foods, enriched with super molecules, making it a food of choice for food sensitive people. CaM has unique properties, revitalizing our bodies and making us stronger and resilient against the stress and toxins of our environments. It revitalizes our bodies after sicknesses, stress, and hard work. In this article, I have tried to compile the camel milk story in 7 points to better understand this natural treasure of the food.

Camel milk's demand is ever increasing among the nontraditional consumers, mostly on health ground. The camel milk is rich with certain molecules which are health promising, therefore, camel milk is known as natural pharmacy. It is my own camel story when I was sick and unable to walk or even move happily. Camel has been part and parcel of my life. Seeing camel caravans, moving Afghan nomads and salts traders made a strong picture of a camel in my mind. A decade earlier severe arthritis (Rheumatoid Arthritis) almost killed me and I was unable to move from the bed. An old wise man advised me to move to the camel breeding area and take fresh camel milk regularly. I started my new life while obeying the advice and reached the Suleiman Mountainous Region of Balochistan (the camel heartland). I lived with the camel people, enjoyed their company, learned a lot about camels, and took camel milk regularly. I established a viewpoint that camel milk is a natural pharmacy not just white fluid milk. I recovered soon and in a short time and started climbing mountains.
