Introduction
In the vast, sun-scorched deserts of the United Arab Emirates grows a truly extraordinary plant — Calligonum comosum (Arabic: ??????, Arta). Known for its resilience, delicate beauty, and ecological importance, this desert shrub has long been considered one of nature’s “magical creatures.” Its story is not just botanical — it is a symbol of endurance, adaptation, and cultural heritage deeply tied to the desert ecosystem and Bedouin traditions (Al-Khulaidi et al., 2023).
A Botanical Portrait
Calligonum comosum belongs to the family Polygonaceae. It is a much-branched, woody shrub that can grow up to two meters tall. Older branches are grey and knotty, while younger green shoots perform photosynthesis in place of leaves (UAE Flora, 2022).
The plant’s flowers are small and white-pink, appearing in spring, followed by distinctive red or yellow-green bristly fruits — the “crowns” of the desert. These fruits, often overlooked, are key identifiers and a favorite sight among desert ecologists and photographers alike (ENHG, 2019).

Traditional and Cultural Value
- Fuelwood: Its wood burns cleanly with minimal smoke, a prized quality among Bedouin communities (DoH Abu Dhabi, 2020).
- Fodder: Provides forage for camels and goats during dry seasons.
- Food & Medicine: Young shoots and fruits are sometimes eaten or mixed with milk and rice. Traditional medicine uses extracts of the plant for stomach ailments, eye infections, and as a natural toothache remedy (DoH Abu Dhabi, 2020).
- Perfume & Dye: Crushed stems have been used to scent hair and fabrics.
Why It’s a “Magical Creature of the Desert”
As I described in my LinkedIn talk (2025), this plant’s magic lies not only in its beauty but in its spirit of survival. It thrives where life seems impossible, turning lifeless dunes into green waves after rare rains.
Its ecological and aesthetic transformations — from bare twigs to green, fruit-laden branches — remind us that life in the desert is not barren but quietly resilient and full of wonder.
Conservation and Sustainable Use
Given its environmental value, Calligonum comosum is a key species for:
- Sand dune stabilization and reforestation in arid regions (CGIAR, 2021).
- Low-maintenance landscaping that reflects native heritage.
- Biodiversity restoration, as its roots and shade create microhabitats for insects and small animals.
However, overgrazing, urban expansion, and off-road driving threaten its natural habitats. Conservation projects should include community awareness, regulated grazing, and seed propagation programs to ensure the survival of this desert guardian.
A Call for Appreciation
In a world increasingly disconnected from its natural roots, plants like Calligonum comosum remind us that resilience and beauty can thrive in the most unexpected places. As we work toward restoring and protecting desert biodiversity, this humble shrub stands as a living example of sustainability — rooted deeply in both nature and culture.
