Based on official 1999 statistics, 92% of Russia’s potatoes, 77% of its vegetables, 87% of fruits, 59.4% of meat, and 49.2% of milk were produced by 35 million families (105 people, 71% of the country’s population). Each of these families cultivated a dacha (a subsidiary plot) making up 8 million hectares of land total.
